Ella arriveth

So, now i too have upgraded to Wordpress 2.1Ella“. It was a remarkably painless operation but i do admit that i was a tad nervous when overwriting my old WP hierarchy with the new one.

I have the WP hierarchy as the root of my html directory, whereas the default WP installation suggests having it in a wordpress directory under the html directory. What i did was to create a foo/ directory under the html/ directory, untar the distribution tarball from there, then from html/foo/, i cp -R wordpress/ ../ and rm -rf foo/ from my html directory.

If the lines above looked like Hebrew to you, either you don’t need to worry, or i’m fluent in Hebrew.

I upgraded on Tuesday myself. I didn’t really worry, since I had the beta installed (not in production use), to try it out before the release, and imported my existing content into it without a hitch.

I did, however, yesterday upgrade my girlfriends WP1.5 to 2.1. Now that made me seriously nervous. Especially since there was no shell available for the job, which made it ever so tricky. Or less simple anyway.

But uploading wordpress into it’s own folder, then copying over wp-config.php and the relevant content from wp-content, and renaming the directories did the trick. All this after making a dump of the database to ensure my nights sleep.

Not to mention I did all this on a Mac. A computer I’m not even close to feeling comfortable using. Unless using the shell, ofcourse ;-)

Just as i thought things were fine, they turned out not to be. The plugin i have to email me a backup of my database every night (well, supposedly that plugin) now sends me hourly error messages instead. I wonder what’s wrong.
