UN council extends East Timor mission for 12 months

I haven’t written anything about Timor-Leste lately, partly because i haven’t even had the chance to keep myself updated on the situation there. Well, in short, it’s a whole lot messier than when i was there.

Anyways, it’s news time.  UN has decided to extend the Timor-Leste mission in Timor-Leste by twelve months (the AlertNet article has a bit more background).  At the time of writing this, the official word isn’t out on the UNMIT site yet (what’s UNMIT?). The move is a reasonable one: there has been a lot of gang violence going on, and there’ll be a presidential election in less than two months. Still, i guess is’t marginally better than the near civil war situation they had a year back, but the road to self-governance is not an easy one.
