Would you like your phone infected?Posted by: llauren in english, geek, tags: dumb, network, nokia, securityA second incarnation of the “mobile phone virus” Cabir is out. The worm spreads using Symbian S60 phones, Bluetooth and clueless users. The trojan Skulls (for that is what it really is), which rides on the Cabir packet, poses as an “extended theme manager” (which it, kinda, also is), replacing all icons with skulls, or generic application icons (see? :), depending on the variant. Skulls makes your “smart phone” into a “dumb phone”, removing all functionality except making and receiving calls. It does this using the excellent customizing feature that if you place a file in the system directory on the phones C:-drive, it will use that instead of the identically-named file in ROM. Sure, it’s a nifty idea, but the S60 guys should have made it possible to boot the phone, bypassing this feature. Macintoshes were able to boot without user-added extensions fifteen years back, and they didn’t have the processing power modern phones have. OK, maybe they had, but at least the screen was black and white, they beeped in monophone and sure as heck didn’t network wirelessly, have fuzzy cameras or come with Snake pre-installed If you get a program that politely inquires whether you’d want to infect your phone (Skulls.A does that; Skulls.B does not), go figure.
