GMail invite spams? »

Lately i have been receiving GMail invites from people that i do not know, to my GMail account. I suspect these may either sent by automata or cheap unscrupled (or uninformed) labour. If i would go and accept the invite, the recipient would know have my confirmed email address and would have a perfect attack [...]

Windows re-opened »

Ah. I have my account unlocked. Kudos to B for this. We did a funky two factor authentication to get the job done, which is to say that we used Messenger and a phone call, to ensure that i was i.

Aku Ankka goes HCISec - Case Kuurakaara »

Kuluneella viikolla ilmestynyt Aku Ankka oli riemastuttava yllätys näin käytettävyydestä ja tietoturvasta (käytettävyys + tietoturva = hcisec) kiinnostuneesta ex-akateemikosta. Vissiin joka tarina kertoo jotenkin tietoturvasta. Otetaan tässä luupin alle lehden avaussarja Kuurakaara.
Pelle Peloton keksii vedellä toimivan auton Roope Ankan markkinoitavaksi (jutun toisessa ruudussa seisoo valloittava pingviiniparvi tiirailemassa keksijän ohikiitävää ilma-alusta!). Fysikaalinen epätodennäköisyys [...]

UN mission in Timor-Leste extended »

The UN security council has voted to extend the current peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste, UNMIT, by a year. Considering the rather volatile current situation (recap: President José Ramos-Horta was shot, but survived, in an assassination attempt on the 11th of February 2008 and the chase for the bad guys is on), i can only consider [...]

Update @ 09:43: Added details about assassination attempts. @ 09:47 Confirmed Darwin, and that JRH is in serious condition but alive. @ 09:56 Added about Reinado. @ 10:10 Confirmed JRH moved. @10:57 I’m on NowPublic.com.
I am very saddened by the news that my former boss (and Nobel peace laureate, president of Timor-Leste and general good [...]

Client-imposed security on Outlook »

At work, we’ve been wondering for some time how the contents of some Outlook event information marked private can become visible to somebody who you’re sharing calendar information as read-only, a common practice at our company. My colleague found an interesting tidbit in the Outlook help files today:
Important   You should not rely on the Private feature [...]

Firefox 1.5 - so what? »

Whee! I have Firefox 1.5 installed! Celebrate celebrate! Except, i don’t really know what for. Sure it’s nice to have a fresh and updated browser but apart from the easy possibility to clear away your private bits from the cache (Simon Garfinkel will be happy) and a MacLike preferences interface, i don’t really know what’s [...]

Microsoft re-invents the wheel »

The first beta of Windows Live was released to the public yesterday. That’s as much as i can say with certainty, since WL does not (yet) work with Firefox. Nor does it work with Konqueror, but i am not surprised. Windows on Linux? From Redmond? That’ll be the day. The press is bablbing incoherently, but [...]

Happy New Year, pt 2 »

Finally a few days of slackness. Phew. I’ve been waiting for it. But let’s first look back at New Year’s eve and the stuff that lead to it.The other day, The Man got himself a new telephone. It’s a nifty little Motorola Razor v3, which i was asked to introduce to him. The phone first [...]

A perfect storm »

After a week of non-stop head-on full force activity with little time to break, i had great plans for the weekend. My plans were to do as little as possible. But Timor Leste had a different plan in store.
Saturday morning, i was woken up by the room service who wanted to come and clean my [...]
