Indiana Jones and the lost thumb.

As a small exercise in geekdom (when i probably should have been to bed already) i installed Xubuntu 6.10 on a one gig Kingston Mini-Migo USB flash drive. Yeah, it’s pretty small :). Instructions are here.

What i didn’t get running straight out of the box was the wireless network, which was handled with a small sudo ifdown eth0 and sudo ifup eth1 from a terminal session. Even the 1920 x 1200 screen (or whatever this is) worked without having to do anything about it. Also, since the installer i used was for Ubuntu, not Xubuntu, some graphical bits seem out of place — like stuff not starting from the menu.

Still, this was more a proof of concept for me, whether this could be done in reasonable time and with reasonable effort. And it could.

Now to bed.

Duh. Seems like both me and a whole bunch of other gullibles out there took “the satirical comment” of a man who had his thumbs modded to be more useful with all his dinky gadgets as reality. Well, it’s not. So while i awarded Thomas Martel with the Eejit of the week award, i guess i must take it back and hang it upon my neck instead. Good it’s already wednesday…

Eejit of the week: Thomas Martel, who surgically altered his thumbs to be compatible with his iPhone and other electronical gadgetry (hello all you user centred designers, take heed and save the world from more desperate users) [“Nutcracker” mp3/cd player by Yong-Seong Kim. Unsure if it’s just a design model (”puumalli” in finnish) or if one has actually been implemented. A hip hop model for playing 12″ vinyls must be in the pipeline.

Nutcracker CD/mp3 player, Yong-Seong Kim

Be warned that Yanko Design, who published the CD/mp3 player above, can seriously impact on your working day efficiency.

I suppose there could be more, but this is as far as my friday ambition takes me :). Suggestions are welcome for next week’s (month’s?) installation of the Weekly Awards.
